New Bedford Festival Theatre proudly announces the acquisition of the exclusive performing rights for "The World’s Most Popular Musical" LES MISERABLES
to be presented July 25, 26, 27, 31 and August 1, 2, 3, 2008 for 9 performances at
New Bedford’s Zeiterion Performing Arts Center.
Acclaimed as the musical that revolutionized Musical Theatre, LES MISERABLES has become an international smash-hit and perhaps the most popular musical in the world. Based on Victor Hugo’s epic novel, LES MISERABLES is set in 19th century France and relates the saga of Jean Valjean, arrested for stealing a loaf of bread and imprisoned for 19 years. Upon his release he finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a life-long struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter. His world-view shattered, Javert commits suicide, and Valjean at last attains the peace he has sought for so long.
